First World War campaign medal awarded to (593) Private H J Lavell, 8th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force.
John Henry Lavell, born 1892, was the son of Henry and Sarah Lavell of 65 High Street, Lambeth, London. He went to Australia and when war broke out enlisted in the AIF serving with 18th Battalion. He was killed in action on 15 April 1918 aged 27 years. His name is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. Lavell had previously served in Egypt and there is a small diary, held by the IWM's Department of Documents, in which he describes his voyage from Australia and his service in Egypt and the Dardanelles.
