Hong Kong Royal Naval Dockyard Police Long Service Medal
small circular gilt bronze medal 31mm in diameter, bearing on the obverse the first coinage effigy of Queen Elizabeth II uncrowned facing right. The whole surrounded by the legend 'ELIZABETH II DEI GRA: BRITT:OMN:REGINA F:D: +' all executed in high relief. The obverse design is plain with the text ' ROYAL NAVAL DOCKYARD POLICE HONG KONG' embossed and the whole surrounded by a wreath of laurels tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The outer edge has a beaded surround. Suspension is from a plain claw fitting with a swivel ring. The ribbon is described as yellow with two navy blue vertical stripes towards the centre.
The medal was instituted in 1920 for award to members of the Hong Kong Royal Dockyard Police who completed 15 years service. Although the Dockyard closed in 1961, men who transferred to other police divisions in the Colony continued to be awarded the medal up to 1973. It is estimated that about 280 medals, in all, were issued. The medal was also awarded in silver.
