History note
Group Captain J E S Hill DSO RAF. Hill joined the RAF in 1939 and served until 1966. During the Second World War he served with No 48 Squadron from Feb 1940-May 1941 flying Ansons with convoy protection duty (including Operation Dynamo - the Evacuation from Dunkirk); with No 407 Squadron from May 1941-Oct 1941, flying Hudsons on convoy protection duties and occupied various training posts. From Sept 1943-Oct 1944 Hill flew Beaufighters in ground straffing operations over Burma with No 211 Squadron. During this period he was captured and imprisoned in Rangoon Gaol. During his post-war service he commanded No 109 Squadron from Dec 1951- Oct 1953, RAF Horsham St. Faith, Dec 1955-Mar 1958, RAF Wartling, Jun 1958-Jul 1960, RAF Kinloss, Oct-Nov 1963 and at RAF Ballykelly, Nov 1963-Jun 1966 His post-war service. His log books covering his career are held in the Documents Archive.
