Squadron Leader H G Hazelden DFC * (1915-2001)
Hedley George Hazelden was born at Sevenoaks, Kent. He won a scholarship to the Judd School at Tonbridge and on completing his education he worked as a clerk at for the Standard Life Assurance. Hazelden joined the RAFVR before the war and qualified as a sergeant pilot. In September 1940 he joined No. 44 Sqdn, Bomber Command flying Handley Page Hampden twin-engined bombers. Following a rest as an instructor on Hampdens, Hazelden joined No 83 Sqdn flying Avro Manchesters. The squadron was subsequently equipped with Avro Lancasters and in the spring of 1942 Hazelden took part in the first 1,000 Bomber Raid on Cologne. Rested a second time, he was chief flying instructor in the twin-engined Vickers Wellington bomber and that was followed by a posting to the Empire Test Pilots' School. Subsequent postings included command of the new Civil Aircraft Test Squadron. Hazelden left the air force in the spring of 1947. and was appointed chief test pilot at Handley Page. In the early 1950s, Hazelden test flew the Victor bomber, which went into service with the RAF in 1957. When Handley Page ceased business in 1970, Hazelden spent several years flying for small airlines. Hazelden was awarded a DFC in 1941 and received a Bar in 1942. He held a number of other awards (Ref: OMD 5551-5557). Hazelden died in August 2001. The Documents Archive holds a series of 9 flying logbooks covering his entire flying career. The log books are accompanied by an ms diary (61pp), with ts transcript (13pp), recording in some detail his first experiences of flying at No 6 Elementary Training School at RAF Sywell (May - June 1939), a certificate awarded on the completion of a course at the Empire Test Pilot's School (January 1944), certificates for the award of the King's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air (June 1947) and the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air (January 1959), a signed envelope, on which Hazelden is pictured, produced in Jersey to mark the 30th anniversary of the first flight of the Handley Page Victor, a portrait photograph of him in uniform (1941) and photographs of B Flight, No 44 Squadron RAF (1941) and of a Lancaster of No 83 Squadron..
