History note
Warrant Officer Richard Alfred Barrett DFC RAF VR, 100 Squadron (9.2.1943- 5.1998). DFC announced in the London Gazette of 20 July 1945 (Page 1502). Barrett enlisted in May 1941 and qualified as an Air Gunner on 6 March 1943. 'He completed a large number of operational missions against the enemy. In October 1943, his machine crashed on returning home and he was seriously injured. Despite this he returned to operations as soon as possible and has since displayed undiminished courage and determination. In February, during a sortie to Dortmund, immediately after bombs had been released his aircraft was attacked by an enemy fighter, but with a steady and accurate burst he destroyed the attacker. His fine fighting spirit, skill and unfailing devotion to duty have at all times been worthy of the highest commendation'. The combat referred to above took place on 20 February 1945 when Barrett was Air Gunner aboard Lancaster (LM34G). His Log Book notes that his aircraft was in combat with a single jet fighter which he claimed as destroyed. This was later confirmed.
