Harry William Nye was born on 1 December 1879 and joined the Royal Navy at Chatham on 29 January 1896 as a Boy 2nd Class He served aboard HMS Monarch during the Boer War 1899-1902 and was present at the bombardment of the Taku Forts during the Third China War 1900 serving abroad HMS Fame. During the First World War he served in HMS Talbot, HMS Pembroke, HMS Prince Eugene and was awarded the DSM in 1917. He received the RN LSCG Medal as a PO serving aboard HMS Queen in 1913. He left the RN in 1920. He subsequently received the 1937 Coronation Medal and the Defence Medal 1939-45.
