First pattern, 'Britannia' issue. The Reverend Harold Spooner MBE MC (1879-1964) joined the Indian Establishment shortly after his Ordination and, in 1911, was posted as Chaplain to 1st Battalion The Middlesex Regiment at Dum Dum. In 1914 he transferred to the 9th Battalion at Dinapur. He took part in the Siege of Kut and later volunteered to stay behind as a POW at Kastamoni. For his gallantry he was awarded the MC. Spooner's papers relating to his time at Kut are held in the Department of Documents.
