First World War campaign medal awarded to 2nd Lieutenant Kenneth Callan-Macardle, 17th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Lieutenant Callan-Macardle died, aged 26, on 9 July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme; his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. The IWM's Department of Documents holds a diary covering his service with the 17th Battalion, Manchester Regiment in France, February-July 1916, and letters relating to his death in action on the Somme.
