Gordon Relief Expedition campaign medal awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel (later Field Marshal Viscount. 1st Earl of Ypres) John Denton Pinkstone French, 19th Hussars. Clasps record service as follows - The Nile 1884-85, this clasp was only awarded to those who served south of Assouan (sic) on or before 7 March 1885, in the expedition to relieve General Gordon, who was murdered in Khartoum on 26 January 1885; Abu Klea refers to the action which took place on 17 January 1885.
Note that the pitting on the obverse of the medal is the result of it being worn next to the pointed Khedive's Star
