Neck Badge and riband of a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Military Division) & CBE
Badge shape: silver gilt and enamel 'cross patonce' surmounted by crown (H 84.5mm x W 62.5mm).
Badge obverse design: within a silver gilt circular centrepiece Britannia (helmeted, sitting upon a shell throne, supporting with her right arm a trident and Union shield, her left arm extended over the sea, above which is a shining sun). The centrepiece is enclosed by a band of crimson enamel bearing in inlaid letters of silver gilt the motto: 'FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE'. The arms of the cross are enamelled pearl and edged with silver gilt and a hinged crown in silver gilt surmounts the upper vertical arm.
Reverse design: the centrepiece bears an ornate and interlaced 'GRI' cypher, surmounted by a crown, enclosed by a rope-moulded edge.
Suspender: circular ring.
Riband (width 44mm): purple with a narrow central red stripe (central red stripe approximately 4 mm wide).

The badge possesses a first pattern central obverse design (with a first pattern riband). The enamelled arms of the cross have a light blue appearance although Statute XXV of the Statutes of the Order (1970) describes the arms as "enamelled pearl"
