Brigadier Eric James Boughton CIE OBE (1894-?)
Eric James Boughton , the son of John Boughton of Leicester, was born in 1894 and educated at Wyggeston Grammar School, Leicestershire. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in 1918, serving in France and Belgium as an embarkation staff officer 1918-19. Boughton transferred to the Indian Army in March 1919 and the Royal Indian Army Service Corps (RIASC) in 1930. Promoted major in 1936, lieutenant colonel in 1940, and brigadier in 1943, he held the appointment of Deputy Director General Food, India from 1943 an appointment of considerable at the height of the Bengal Famine. Following his retirement from the Indian Army in 1947, he was employed with the Ministry of Food from 1948. Boughton was appointed OBE (1943) and CIE (1947). The IWM holds Boughton's medals (Ref: OMD 231;OMD 742-749); plus an extensive collection of uniform and accoutrements from his service with the RIASC ((Ref: 45/74). The Documents Archive hold a collection of documents concerning his service in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, 1914 - 1918, and later in the Indian Army, 1919 - 1945, including his several commissions, the Warrants for his OBE and CIE, various invitations to functions held in India, some official forms, private letters and memoranda, plus a photograph album and linen map.
