Object description
A Type 3 MKI (B MK I) suitcase transmitter and receiver radio set, for use by various SOE operatives, Norwegian intelligence agents and various Resistance movements during the Second World War.
Physical description
Brown-coloured suitcase with metal-bound corners and carrying-handle. Inner of suitcase is lined with brown and cream striped paper. There is a sticker on the inside of the suitcase.
The radio inside is divided into four sections, and a section for storage. The storage is three compartments made of metal and the space at the end. Stored are a spool of electrical wire, five coils (wire wrapped around a spool with pins underneath as a connector) and a Crystal Unit (see inscription).
First radio section:
At the top is a chart typed on white paper, covered with clear perspex. The label above reads 3 MK.1. SER No. 1978. There is a small flick switch to the right.
Beneath this is a large black dial, the scale in underneath on a metal disc. Underneath this are two knobs, WAVE BAND and VOLUME.
Second radio section:
Four small textured knobs at the top, three are red and one is black. To the right of this is a dial measuring milliamperes with a separate tuning knob. There are two black bakelite dials with knobs beneath.
Under this is an orange coupling point for coils, four holes in a row, then a small gap and another hole.
There is a red light central to the unit, and below this are two fluted black knobs for CRYSTAL CURRENT and EXCITATION. There is a felt-lined section for plugging in the crystal unit. One is attached (see inscription). There is also a phone point and a wire protruding from a hole.
Third unit:
There are six inputs at the top, +0V, +5V, +10V, +0V, +15V, +30V. Under this are four knobs labelled in pairs, 100V and 200V. There is a central red light.
At the bottom is a section labelled FUSES, with a connector underneath.
Fourth unit:
Central red light. FIX KEY labelling two screw heads at the top of the section. At the bottom is another section marked FUSES, similar to the one in the third unit, with a connector underneath.
