Physical description

Grip form: heavy cast alloy pistol-style grip shaped for comfortable handling and fitted with a knuckle-duster like guard . The grip is specially shaped so that three fingers are positioned below blade and one, the index finger, is positioned above. The blade, running at a right angle from grip, therefore projects from the middle of the clenched fist. Blade form: short, flattened oval section, double-edged blade tapering to narrow spear point. Two narrow fullers, which merge towards tip, are formed on each face. Some areas of minor rust. Tan leather scabbard comprising a flat belt loop attached to the edge of which is the blade sleeve proper (acknowledging the unusual configuration of the blade, the edge is at right angles to the strap). A thin leather securing strap fixes to a brass fastener.

Label

This 'punch dagger' was one of a series of daggers produced during the First World War by Robbins of Dudley. They were intended for private purchase by soldiers serving at the Front (see WEA 637). This knife saw service during the Second World War, in the possession of Sergeant Kenneth Phillott. Phillott served with No 4 Commando, and later with the HQ Company of 1st Commando Brigade. He saw action on the Lofoten Islands, at Dieppe and during the 1944-45 campaign in North-Western Europe. He is mentioned in Lord Lovat's memoir 'March Past' and quoted in various other publications. After the war he was a leading figure in the Commando Association.
