Physical description
highly ornate leather covered wooden scabbard with long and elaborately decorated gold mounts. Long topmount, the inner edge of which is slit to accommodate the curved sword blade. Each side of topmount bears Arabic script in inlaid enamel. Text is translated as "The blessed sword of theSultan Abdul Majid, presented to the Grand Vizier Othman Pasha el Ghazy"(Abdul Majid, 1823-1861, was Sultan of Turkey at the time of the Crimean War),and "There is no God but God. The Kingdom belongs to God, the King of Kings".Linking topmount and chape, on either side scabbard body, is short gold plateengraved with Arabic script translated as "There is no God but God" and "OProphet of God, intercede for us". The long gold chape is richly embossed withfoliate and scrollwork motifs, enamelled panels and has, like topmount, a single mount with loose ring
