sword bayonet for Model 1898 Mauser rifle & Seitengewehr Model 1898/05 [second type, flashguard]
Pommel form: vestigial beakhead with T-O shaped attachment slot. Press stud, on right side, operates locking catch via internal coiled spring. Pommel meets grips in double curve.
Grips form: two-piece wood, retained by two plain-headed bolts with slotted nuts. Grips are adorned with nine diagonal grooves, back flat and straight, underside rounded and well-shaped to hand. A small cleaning hole is located immediately behind guard. A sheet steel flashguard has been attached to hilt back.
Crossguard form: short straight crosspiece, lower guard formed into backswept quillon with flared terminal. Upper guard extends barely 4 mm above hilt and is concave ground to form two eared extensions which provide support for firearm's barrel.
Blade form: single-edged, swell point, fullered. Fuller stops rounded.
