Das Lied von der dicken Berta
Von einem alten Mülheimer.
Melodie: Bis war 1870 sind nach Frankreich einmarschiert.
1) Als wir neunzehnhundertvierzehn
Gegen Welschland sind marschiert,
Ist die dicke, dicke Berta
Immer hinterdrein spaziert.
Alles blieb am Wege stehn,
Um die Berta mal zu sehn.
Um die Berta mal zu sehn.
Alles rief und lachte laut:
Berta du bist schön gebaut.
2) Als die wak'ren Dreiundfünfz'ger
Gleich auf Lüftich sturmten an,
Mukte ach, sein Leben lassen,
Mancher tapf're junge Mann.
Da kam Berta angeschnaust:
Nee, ihr Jungens, was ihr lauft,
Macht mir doch ein wenig Platz,
Ich beschau mir mal den Schatz.
3) Und sie steckt in's holde Mündchen
Ein Bonböngchen rund und sein,
Wohl so etlich hundert Pfündchen
Mocht es an Gewichte sein.
Stellte sich in Positur,
Brummte erst ein bischen nur,
Macht 'nen Pust und schaut und lacht,
Wie es drauf in Lüttich kracht.
4) Als die Berta paar Bongböngchen
Auf die Feste hat gespuckt,
Hat gar bald die Weike Fahne
An den Forts herausgeguckt.
Und ihr braver Kanonier,
Sprach zur Berta: Gratulier!
Siehste wohl, das gibt Respekt
Wenn man's einmal hat geschmeckt.
5) Und die Jungen zogen weiter,
Kamen dann auch vor Namur;
Aber ach, sie fanden dorten,
Schon verrammeit Tor und Tür.
Doch sie klopsten feste an,
Und die Berta kam heran,
Machte Pustepuste drauf
Und die Tore flogen auf.
6) Jeko steht die dicke Berta
Vor Verdun und gegen Toul
Und ihr Schatz, der Kanonier, nimmt
Sich nen Schluck aus seiner Pull.
Und dann pustet Berta los,
Auf den windigen Franzos,
Bis die rote Hole schön,
Sie von hinten kann besehn.
7) Zieht demnächst die dicke Berta
Vor Paris und sonstwo ein,
Schreit der Franzmann wie John Bull dann
Très bien und Very fine!
Wer dich Berta hat gesehn,
Kann dir nimmer wiederstehn
Rund und stramm und nicht zu klein
Nimmst du alles für dich ein.
8) Ist der Friede dann geschlossen,
Geht's mit Hurra nach Berlin,
Und mit unserer dicken Berta
Wir zum Kaiser Wilhelm ziehn.
Willem spricht zu ihr vergnügt:
Siehste wohl, wir han gesiegt!
Macht das Maul noch einer gross
Ziehn wir beide wieder los!

[Our 42 cm shell. The song of Big Bertha by an old Mülheimer. Melody: And 'twas 1870 when we invaded France. 1) When in nineteen hundred
fourteen we marched against French Switzerland, the fat, Big Bertha always ambled up behind us. Everyone along the way stopped to look at
Bertha. To look at Bertha. Everyone called and laughed aloud: Bertha you are beautifully built. 2) When the valiant Fifty Thirds swiftly
stormed Liège, there moaned, giving up his life, many a courageous young man. Bertha came along, wheezing heavily: No, you young ones, why
are you running, do make a little room for me, I'll inspect the treasure. 3) And she put into her fair mouth a bonbon round and [unclear],
something like one hundred pounds it might have been in weight. Placed herself in position, growled a bit at first, huffed and puffed and
looked and laughed, as it crashed down in Liège. 4) Once Bertha has spat a few bonbons at the stronghold, soon she spies the white flag on
the fort. And her honest gunner, said to Bertha: Congratulations! You can see, this gives respect once one's had a taste of this. 5) And
the young men marched on, and came before Namur; but oh, there they found the gate and door already bolted. But they knocked hard, and
Bertha came up, huffed and puffed at it and the gates flew open. 6) Now Big Bertha stands before Verdun and against Toul and her treasure,
the gunner, takes a swig from his bottle. And then Bertha puffs away, at the shady Frenchman, until from behind she can well, see the red
hell. 7) Next Big Bertha came up before Paris and elsewhere, the Frenchman then cries like John Bull 'très bien' and very fine! Anyone
who's seen you, Bertha, can never resist you, round and sturdy and not too small you capture everything for yourself. 8) Once peace is
signed, it'll be with a Hurrah to Berlin, and with our Big Bertha. We'll go up to Kaiser William. William speaks to her with pleasure: See
here, we have won! Open your mouth wide once more. Let's go off again the both of us! Liège, Namur, Maubeuge, Longwy, Antwerp, Toul,
