image: An abstract image of technological and maritime forms. There is an area of deep red colour on the left of the composition, and a dark hook shape as seen from the side in the centre. Around this there are other small, abstract details.

Label

John Tunnard was a painter of semi-abstract compositions grounded in a strong sense of design. He had originally studied design at the Royal College of Art and worked as a textile designer before concentrating on painting in the 1930s. This led to his first one-man exhibition in 1933 and a year later he became a member of the London Group. Tunnard served as an Auxiliary Coastguard in Cadgwith Cove, Cornwall during the Second World War, where he had lived with his wife Mary since 1930. Observation of shipping in this role clearly helped to inspire 'Anglo Dutch'. The amorphous shape of a cargo ship floats within a large, transparent outline of a sea wall. Associated shapes suggestive of rudders, signal masts and the triangular and circular symbols of naval charts and flags add to the nautical subject matter. Even the oxide reds that form part of the composition imply the rusting hulls of ships.

Label

'Anglo Dutch' was an ocean-going cargo ship. In the painting it seems to float inside the massive yet transparent shape of a naval fort or sea wall, the sea at its foot meets the dark grey sky on the right. The oxide red suggests the rusting sides of ships. The shapes of rudders, a ship's prow, weather dogs, signal masts and the triangles and dots of chart symbols pierce and enlace the bold forms in the centre. Though never an official war artist, Tunnard's paintings of the Forties capture the essential modernity of the Second World War, just as Abram Games did in terms of poster design. The combination of technological forms and symbols were intended to give a vision of a future reality.
