THE EPIC OF MALTA G.C.
JUNE 1940 - JULY 1943
Malta lies midway between the eastern and western gates of the Mediterranean. It commands also the stretch of water where Europe and North
Africa are only 90 miles apart. Whoever commands the Mediterranean must first command Malta. For over two years Malta stood in a state of
siege, the first air-siege in history. Dependent on the outside world for supplies, Malts had to be provisioned by the British Merchant
Navy under the protection of the Fleet. Many were the gallant men and ships lost, but Malta was sustained. The all-out Axis attempts to
subdue the Island were met, and beaten, by an all-out defence which, mounting in strength with every fresh convoy brought through,
gradually assumed the character of a herd-hitting offensive. Malts, Island of Heroes, became the key-point of Mediterranean strategy. Had
Malta yielded, the expulsion of the Axis from Africa might have been long delayed. But Malta did not yield. From a battered, besieged and
beleaguered fortress, Malta, awarded the George Cross for its gallantry, has become the very spearhead of the United Nations' Mediterranean
attack.
