image: A stationary aircraft with its landing wheels down and wings folded up. It stands in an abstract space, a patch of grey landing strip lies just below.

'Gradually the air would be filled with the hum of engines, like bees. They'd all come up, as if they were coming up from the hive, they'd spread over the deck and my heart would be thumping, it was so exciting.' Leonard Rosoman, interviewed in 1989 Some artists see aerial machines through a dream-like, surrealist lens, re-imagining them as living creatures. Leonard Rosoman's drawings of Corsair planes playfully balance the sinister with the comic. His vivid description above relates to the activity he observed on board an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean during his assignment as an official war artist in the Second World War.
