Transparencies taken between 1964 and 1966 during the service of Brigadier Robert Louis Hargroves as commander of the Aden Garrison and Aden Brigade. The collection contains aerial and ground-based photography taken of locations across the protectorate, as well as scenes of military operations and life of personnel and their families.

Various views around Aden: those identified include RAF Khormaksar seen from the air, aerial views of Perim Island, the oil refinery at Little Aden, Steamer Point (Tawahi) and Crater in 1964, scenes in Abyan province including views of Mukeiras, in the north east of the province.
Military operations include: Blackburn Beverleys of No. 84 Squadron RAF and also Bristol Britannia C.1 (XL659 'POLARIS') of No. 511 Squadron both seen at RAF Khormaksar, flying operations on HMS EAGLE (including de Havilland Sea Vixens and Westland Gannets) seen during a visit by Hargroves in April-May 1965, helicopter exercises (probably Exercise Jebel Jumper) with 848 Naval Air Squadron on HMS ALBION, the 1964 Minden Day parade by 1st Battalion East Anglian Regiment at their base at Waterloo Lines, views of various vessels in Aden Harbour including Royal Navy minesweepers HMSs FENTON, KEDLESTON, SEFTON and TARLTON, Air Sea Rescue Launch HMAFV 1380 of the RAF Marine Craft Unit, USS BEATTY (DD756) (in the background is HMS GURKHA (F122)), loading trials with the RFA SIR LANCELOT, a small flotilla of Soviet 'trawlers', probably intelligence gathering ships, Hargroves' staff car (a Ford Zephyr) and driver, views of Fort Tarshyne, the official residence and office of the Royal Navy's Flag Officer Middle East, ceremonial guard of local forces on Perim Island, informal portraits of men of RADFORCE, scenes of encampments in the 'up-country' area of Aden Protectorate during the Radfan campaign, including the tented headquarters of B Company, Royal Sussex Regiment, a ceremonial parade by South Arabian forces in Khormaksar, including the South Arabian Federal Regular Army and the Aden Protectorate Levies, operations by British and South Arabian forces in Mukeiras, military presence and armed-locals at Abyan, as well as scenes during a visit to Bahrein in 1965, including passengers and casualties seen on board a Bristol Britannia, the cockpit, street scenes, local forces.
Amongst the military operations Hargroves and his family, along with other officer and men enjoyed what Aden had to offer including a social outing to the 'Blue Grotto' and swimming from a Vehicle Landing Craft (VLC 1) of the Royal Logistics Corps, sports events at Khormaksar including a running race, a cricket match and a game of rugby, as well as relaxing at a beach.
