Copy negatives produced from photographs relating to the service of an unidentified officer (named only as G.W. in original album) with a battalion of the East Surrey Regiment on the Western Front during the First World War. The photographs show G.W. in British front line trenches on the Somme and in the Ypres Salient. Of particular interest are photographs showing five soldiers at the bottom of the Lochnagar mine crater near La Boisselle spelling out the word SOMME in semaphore; one of G.W. at rest just prior to going 'over the top' on the Somme; and one showing G.W. beside a group of blanket-covered bodies awaiting burial. There are also two photographs showing members of staff who worked with May Honeybourne in the Pigeon Section (Office 733) at Royal Air Force HQ, Hotel Cecil, The Strand, London.
