THE ROYAL ENGINEERS EXPERIMENTAL STATION AT PORTON DOWN DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR
The Porton Light Railway: the finished track at Porton Railway Station bridge. The Porton Light Railway (also known as the Porton Military Railway) was a 24 inch guage system equipped with five steam locomotives, a petrol locomotive and 150 assorted carriages and wagons. It started at sidings located alongside the London and South Western Railway Company main line at Porton Station and ran for eight miles linking every major building on the site at Porton. It carried civilian workmen, fuel and stores from the main line station at Porton until it was phased out and dismantled during the 1950s.
