GREEK BISHOP OF SAN FRANCISCO CONSECRATED IN NEW YORK, 23 NOVEMBER 1941
The consecration of Bishop Ireneos Tsourounakis, Greek Othodox Bishop of San Francisco, in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New York. The ceremony, which took place on 23 November 1941, was officiated by His Grace The Archbishop of America Athenagoras (centre). On his right are the Polish Bishop Savvas, and the Ukranian Bishop Bogdan. The new Bishop of San Francisco is facing Archbishop Athenagoras.
When Italy declared war on 10 June 1940, the Italian Army in Libya threatened the vital Suez Canal in British-occupied Egypt. Italian forces attacked Egypt on 13 September. General O’Connor’s Western Desert Force was outnumbered, but his commander-in-chief, General Wavell, ordered a surprise attack at Sidi Barrani three days later.
