TESTING OF THE BRITISH CHEVALINE SYSTEM WITH THE ROYAL NAVY POLARIS MISSILE, CAPE CANAVERAL, UNITED STATES, 1976 - 1980
A Royal Navy Polaris missile, with Chevaline payload, breaks the surface of the sea during a DASO [Data Analysis & Shake Out] launch from a submerged British Royal Navy submarine, HMS RESOLUTION, off Cape Canaveral. The missile's rocket engines are just igniting.
Polaris was launched from the submarine using compressed air. Its rocket engines ignited once the missile emerged from the sea. Photograph taken from USS MANITOWIC (distant view).
