Seen near Venice the 12,000 ton Assault Ship HMS INTREPID (L11). She was built for amphibious warfare and is fitted out as a Naval Assault Group/Brigade HQ from which naval and military personnel can mount and control an amphibious operation. She can transport a military force complete with full supporting armour. Landing craft capable of carrying heavy tanks are housed in the ship's dock and launched from the open stern. She can also operate a flight of assault helicopters. HMS INTREPID (L11), which was launched in 1964 and completed in 1967, is 520 ft long, has a beam of 80 feet, is armed with the Seacat guided missile system and two 40mm Bofors guns and has a complement of 580.
