The Tanganyika Naval Volunteer Force is an African force led by British Officers and Petty Officers. It has been in existence for four and a half years. It carries out minesweeping, coast watching and coastal patrol duties, taking these over from the Naval Command. Its main functions however are the manning of signal stations, the provision of crews for small craft, the disposal of mines washed up on the coast, and the training of personnel for a pool from which they may be drafted to meet Naval requirements.
