A British officer recruiting natives for the 5th Battalion, King's African Rifles (a Kenya regiment) assisted by a native sergeant, a veteran of the last war and probably a member of the same tribe as the recruits, who are shown having their thumb prints taken on the attestation paper. Other battalions of the King's African Rifles are recruited from local tribes in Uganda, Tanganyika and Nyasaland. In wartime there is great competition from the natives in all these territories to become soldiers, the arrival of the recruiting officer being eagerly awaited.
