THE THUNDERBIRD GUIDED WEAPON DEFENCE SYSTEM, A GROUND-TO-AIR ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILE, PRODUCED BY THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANY FOR THE ARMY AND ROYAL AIR FORCE.
A model of a Field Assembly and Test Point where Thunderbird missiles are rapidly assembled, tested and taken to the launching site ready for immediate firing by remote control. The missiles arrive in containers (background), are transferred to the assembly line (centre) where functional tests are made and the wings, control fins and boost motors fitted, and then taken by trolley (right foreground) to the launching site. The whole of the Field Assembly and Test Point is mobile and the size may be varied to deal with any number of missiles. The metal frame over the assembly line is normally covered and weatherproof. This was removed to take the photograph.
