The collections contains a large number of photographs relating to the service of Robert Frederick Wayman with the Westminster Dragoons during the First World War. These include scenes in camp at Pirbright, Streatly and Gun Hill, Southwold, during July and August 1914 (a number of these are postcards and include messages written home relating to the changing situation in camp at that time). There are also photographs covering the regiment's troopship voyage on the SS ARAGON from Southampton to Alexandria in Egypt. Coverage of the unit's time in Egypt includes images of the barracks, rifle range and stables at Alexandria; life in barracks at Heliopolis and the quarters occupied by the Hertfordshire Yeomanry; general scenes in Cairo; trench digging and mounted field exercises; the funeral of Regimental Sergeant Major W H Crouch (7th Dragoon Guards); visits to the Pyramids and Sphinx; tented camps and watering of horses at Ismalia and Dabaa. There are also photographs of pontoons abandoned by the Turks after their failed attempt to cross the Suez Canal on 3 February 1915. The collection also includes a number of informal portraits of individuals who served with the Westminster Dragoons, namely: Lieutenant Williamson, Sergeant Grey and Troopers Barlow, Campbell, Hyde and Whitby.
One small album contains photographs relating to amphibious manoeuvres at Clacton-on-Sea in September 1904. These include steam launches manned by the Royal Navy landing infantry, yeomanry and horses; field guns in action and troops (including a Yeomanry band) embarking from a temporary pier constructed on the beach at Clacton; senior British officers and French and Italian military observers at the manoeuvres.
Wayman's time training to be a pilot in the RAF during 1918 is covered by a formal group photograph of RAF cadets in Cairo (38th Training Wing); Wayman seated at the controls of a Sopwith Pup (serial shown as 6047 - actually B6047) and Wayman and two colleagues alongside the same aircraft. There is also a photograph of Wayman's grave in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery. Finally, the collection includes a portrait photograph of Wayman as a small child and a school football team group photograph from before the First World War.
Also part of the collection is the Baptism certificate of Robert Frederick Wayman.
