Object description

Two albums containing a total of 587 prints. Album 1 is entitled: 'Photographic Pictures on or near the Yangtze - Kiang River.' This includes photographs of the river gunboats HMS KINSHA and HMS TEAL along with HMS ALACRITY (Skipper was serving on the KINSHA at this time - 1920). For HMS KINSHA there are also photographs of her wheelhouse, the Engine Room Artificers' Mess, the forward 12 pdr gun and portraits of members of the crew, including a number of Chinese. RN sailors are also depicted off-duty and engaged in sports. The latter include a cricket match: HMS KINSHA v HMS MANTIS and a 2nd round football match in the Scottowe Cup: Royal Navy v S.M. Police. A couple of sailors are also shown in fancydress whilst making a collection for St Dunstan's home for blind ex-servicemen. Locations depicted include Hankow, Hong Kong, Ichang and Shanghai. There are general scenes of the landscape, buildings in towns and villages, peasant farming, fishing, funeral processions and an official procession in aid of famine relief. Also included are a number of excellent portraits of local Chinese inhabitants. Album 2 is an official commemorative album entitled: 'World Cruise of the British Special Service Squadron 1923-1924.' Images include a portrait of King George V in Admiral's uniform and portraits of the commanders and ships of the Special Service Squadron: Vice Admiral Sir Frederick Laurence Field KCB, CMG (Commanding the Squadron), Rear Admiral The Hon. Sir Hubert Brand KCMG, KCVO, CB (Commanding 1st Light Cruiser Squadron), Captain John K Im Thurn CBE (HMS HOOD), Captain Henry W Parker CB (HMS REPULSE), Captain James M Pipon MVO, OBE (HMS DELHI), Captain Francis M Austin (HMS DANAE), Captain Bernard W M Fairbairn OBE (HMS DRAGON) and Captain Charles W Round-Turner (HMS DAUNTLESS). There is also a photograph of HMAS ADELAIDE, which joined the Squadron at Sydney in April 1924. Completing the series of portraits is one of Admiral Viscount Jellicoe of Scapa (Governor General of New Zealand) on the bridge of HMS HOOD with Vice Admiral Field. Following the portraits are a series of captioned prints covering places visited and activities undertaken during the world cruise (route taken by HMS HOOD, HMS REPULSE and HMAS ADELAIDE). Places include: Sierra Leone (Freetown), South Africa (Cape Town, Pietermaritzberg, Durban), Kenya (Mombassa, Nairobi), Zanzibar, Tanganyika (Dar-es-Salaam), Singapore, Ceylon (Trincomali), Penang, Port Swettenham, Singapore, Australia (Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney, Brisbane, Gisborne, Perth), New Zealand (Rotorua, Wellington, Auckland), Fiji (Suva), Honolulu, Canada (Victoria, Vancouver, Quebec, Toronto, Banff), USA (San Francisco), Panama Canal, Jamaica (Kingston, Chapelton), Nova Scotia (Halifax), Newfoundland (St Johns). General subjects include: Crossing the Line ceremonies, landscapes, buildings and local inhabitants of varied locations, sporting events, sailors on sightseeing trips, visitors to the ships (includes huge crowds at Melbourne), general scenes at sea during the world cruise, issue of grog and lime juice to sailors. Of particular interest are a view of HMS DANAE passing Krakatoa, HMAS AUSTRALIA being towed out to sea for scuttling under the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty, the field gun crew of HMS REPULSE - winners of the field gun race at the Toronto Exhibition Tournament 1924 and buildings of the Royal Australian Naval College at Jervis Bay.

Commemorative album available for purchase by officers and men taking part in the Royal Navy's World Cruise 1923 – 1924. The cruise, nicknamed 'World Booze' by the sailors, involved the battlecruisers HMS Hood and HMS Repulse and 6 light cruisers. Covering 38,000 miles the ships visited major ports across the British Empire and South America plus San Francisco. With over 1 million people visiting the ships, the cruise was intended to underline Britain's position as a global naval power.
