One photograph album containing 265 prints/photo postcards, plus 2 loose photographic prints, covering the Mediterranean cruises of HMS CURACOA between 11 September 1929 and 10 February 1932. Photographic reproductions of a programme and maps of the voyages are included.
The album contains images of places visited: Alexandretta, Alexandria, Barcelona (includes scenes at a Bullfight), Beirut, Brioni, Cagliari, Constanza (includes visit of Queen Marie, Princess Helen and the young King Michael to the ship), Corfu, Corinth Canal, Egypt (River Nile, pyramids, Sphinx), Gibraltar, Gruz (Yugoslavia), Istanbul, Kotor (Yugoslavia), Limassol, Malta (including - Grand Harbour, Naval Canteen, Saluting Battery), Monte Carlo, Nice, Oran (Algeria), Pola, Rhodes, Skiathos, Spetsai (Greece), Venice. There are also numerous scenes of naval life including training (landing of armed shore parties, Fleet exercises, firing of practice torpedoes), raising of the anchor using a manual capstan, Christmas onboard ship, sports (athletics, cutter racing, football, swimming) including team photographs and silverware such as medals and trophies, the latter including the Arbuthnot Trophy awarded to the winning team of the Mediterranean Fleet Cruisers' Marathon (scenes of the 1928 Marathon are included). Photographs of the following British warships are also to be found in the collection: HMS CALEDON (after a collision with the Italian steamer ANTARS), HMS CENTURION (Mediterranean Fleet target ship), HMS GLORIOUS (after collision with a French liner on 1 April 1931, includes views of damage to the liner), L Class submarines (Malta - 6 March 1931), HMS RENOWN, HMS RODNEY and the submarine HMS ROVER. Finally there is a small series of photographs titled 'Filming the Coronel Battle' in which HMS CARDIFF features prominently, and a single photograph of the reenacting of the Gallipoli landings taken during the filming of 'Tell England.'
