image: Five soldiers in a trench. The two central figures are firing a mortar at a target to the right of a copse of decapitated trees. There are three vertical clouds of smoke rising from the ground where the mortar has hit. The soldier on the far right observes the target, and the fourth, kneeling on the duckboards, readies a mortar-bomb. The fifth soldier moves along the trench to the left of the composition.
