Bigot
This was the codename for the top-secret clearance required to learn details of the invasion plans. Officers with this knowledge were
called "Bigoted".
In the early months of 1944, large scale rehearsals for the landings were carried out at Slapton Sands in Devon. On April 28, the rehearsal
for the Utah landing, codenamed "Tiger", was intercepted by seven German torpedo boats.
639 American soldiers were killed. This was kept secret at the time, and tragically three times the number who actually died on Utah on D-
Day.
Ten of these men were "Bigoted" officers. To be certain that the invasion plans remained secure, a vast underwater search successfully
retrieved their corpses. Had they been picked up alive by the Germans, vital secrets would have been lost. '
