Madrid.
For over three centuries Madrid has been in undisputed possession of the title of capital of Spain, and if when the military rebellion
broke out this had not been so, it would have conquered that title by this year of sacrifice and heroism. And it would have achieved that
honour, as all great things are achieved, without directly aiming thereat and by aspiring to things much higher.
Madrid represented Spain, all Spain, that is to say, the Spain which remained loyal to the Government of the People. Fighting without truce
against traitors from within and enemies from without, Madrid did not have a single moment of hesitation, doubt or cowardice, nor even a
single moment of vanity. Not once did Madrid cry out, "Long live Madrid!" but always, "Long live the People!".
Madrid has proved to be more than the capital of Spain and an example to all good Spaniards, because in defending the cause of the People,
it is shedding its blood for all peoples and is defending the future of the world.
