image: a giant German Imperial eagle, brandishing a fiery torch, flies above the war torn ruins of French and Belgian buildings. Two of the buildings visible are Rheims cathedral and the Cloth Hall in Ypres. Both were iconic symbols of the plight of France and Belgium respectively during the First World War, as both were badly damaged by artillery bombardment. This damage was often used as a visual metaphor for the destructive nature of the German invasion, which showed little respect for sites of historical and cultural importance.
