'Le Rire' (literally 'The Laugh') was a French humorous journal founded by Felix Juven in Paris in 1894. Light-hearted
and often bawdy in its satirising of political and social issues, it perfectly captured the spirit of la belle epoque.
The journal was also highly regarded for its pictorial qualities with each edition featuring lavish, full-colour illustrations on its
covers and centre spread.
Many notable artists working in fin-de-siècle Paris contributed work to pages of 'Le Rire'. The most famous of these was Henri de Toulouse-
Lautrec, who produced several coloured and monochrome drawings during its early publication. Théophile Steinlen also provided illustrations
and the Italian-born designer, Leonetto Cappiello, earned early recognition and his first poster commission through his work for the
journal.
