Commander John Linton was commander of the T-Class Submarine Turbulent when it went missing in 1943. He was posthumously awarded the VC for sustained bravery and leadership during his four years of wartime service.
Parkash Singh (1913-1991) served in the Indian Army during the Second World War. He showed great courage under fire against the Japanese and was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC). Parkash was born in the western Punjab in India (now in Pakistan).
It was the duty of all Allied prisoners of war (POWs) to try to escape. If they made it home they could re-join the war and fight again, but even those who didn’t make it back to safety still helped the war effort by occupying large numbers of police and soldiers sent to track them down.
