Handwritten note on page 1 'by Capt. W.H. Eve, 13th Hussars. Killed at Laij. March 5, 1917', but text on page 8 states 'It was only when we reached the Turkish trench that we were able to take a breather and take stock and then only did I fully realize the cost of our ride... Captain Eve was missing and it was feared killed...'
