German portrait medal dated 1912 by H Hahn commemorating the centenary of the birth of the famous metallurgist and industrialist Arthur Krupp (1812-1887). Son of Frederick Krupp (1787-1826) who founded the Krupp Works at Essen in 1810, Alfred began ordnance manufacture in 1847 thereafter the works became famous for arms production including the 1851 breech-loading cannon and the monstrous 'Big Bertha', a 42 cm gun used in the First World War.
