Object description

image: The overall impression is of a woman's face in a hat and veil against a blue background. There is a moon-like face in the upper right and a tumbling winged figure in the upper centre. On closer inspection the veil over the woman's face is made up of a collection of images of various people, including a soldier, children, men and women. The blue background is inscribed with Stars of David, figures of Death or the Four Horsemen, swastikas and yellow stars and set with oblong faceted clear glass. The tumbling winged figure is reminiscent of images of a fallen angel. The moon-like face has a figure of a man etched on its right side. A burning synagogue in orange glass lies in the lower right corner. The lettering on the top of the frame reads 'A Dream of Kristallnacht', and below 'They thought they were Germans'.

Label

This refers to 'Kristallnacht', 9 November 1938, when throughout Germany the German-Jewish community and their property were subjected to attack by Nazi Storm Troopers and members of the public. Goebbels, then Minister for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, claimed that the attack was a spontaneous reaction to the assassination of a German diplomat named von Rath, by Hershel Grynspan, a young Polish Jew in Paris. Overnight thousands of Jewish shops were smashed and looted and hundreds of synagogues were burned. The number of Jews who died is unknown.
