In this 1917 piece, Goetz uses the mythic imagery of Europa and the bull, to project a bitter vision of the future. He
foresees the destruction of Europe as a consequence of internecine warfare and the rise to supremacy of nations of the new world - the USA
and Japan - by their artful exploitation of war, trade and alliances. The obverse text is translated as 'Europe's suicide' and the reverse
text as 'The laughing inheritors'.
