April. Clearance divers from training establishment «HMS Vernon» salvage the fire damaged engine from a crashed Boeing 707. An engine on British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) Flight 712 caught fire after take-off and fell into a gravel pit in Staines, Middlesex, managed to carry out an emergency landing but caught fire once on the ground. Five people were killed, one being stewardess Barbara Harrison, who was posthumously awarded the only George Cross to go directly to a female in peacetime. Chief Petty Officer David Lardner and Leading Seaman Michael Lambert retrieved the engine.
