HANDOVER OF THE OLD STATE BUILDING, BASRA CITY, TO IRAQI CONTROL, 20 MARCH 2007 (TAPE 1) [Allocated Title]
As part of the gradual transfer of security from Coalition to Iraqi control, the Old State Building in Basra is ceremonially handed over to the Iraqi Army.
I. Preparations: convoy of Iraqi Army vehicles arrives through the main gates and are greeted by British soldiers. Interviews with Lance Corporal Michael Anthony Larne and Kingsman Martin Mallett, both of Chindit Company, 2nd Battalion the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (2 LANCS, the outgoing "residents" of the Building) about the handover. Iraqi Army troops prepare as members of 2 LANCS rehearse the flag-lowering as buglers play. Iraqi form up as members of Chindit Company stand by their Warrior vehicles; further rehearsals take place. Interview with Lieutenant Roderick Pino of 2 LANCS.
II. The ceremony itself: buglers play and VIPs take their seats. Flag party marches on and the British flag is lowered, followed by the raising of the Iraqi flag. Dignitaries stand as the keys are formally handed over and the salute is taken. The parade marches off.
III. After the parade, Brigadier Tim Evans, CO of 19 Light Brigade, talks with General Habib, General Officer Commanding 10 Division, Iraqi Army. Brigadier Evans is interviewed. Jubilant members of the Iraqi Army cheer and dance. Major Chris Job, OC of the departing Chindit Company of 2 LANCS, is interviewed, before shots of 2 LANCS' Warrior armoured vehicles leaving the Old State Building precincts.
