OPERATION OOZE, BASRA, 27 MAY 2006 [Allocated Title]
Scenes from Operation Ooze, a search and arrest mission against suspected insurgents in Basra City, carried out by members of 1st Battalion the Light Infantry in support of Iraqi special forces. Partly shot with an image intensifier.
Image intensifier: troops outside suspect house, backed up by Snatch Land Rovers. Wall is scaled with ladder. Inside, suspects are held under guard as the house is searched. Guns, mobile phones and potential bomb-making are seized. Normal camera views of the interior of rooms, showing clearly the seized weaponry and other items waiting to be bagged. Further items discovered include a grenade and a mortar. The contraband is inventoried and photographed before being bagged. Other items seized, including rifles, handguns, an aerial photograph of Basra and detonators. Daylight: the suspects are led out into the courtyard of the house and told to kneel. Outside, a bomb disposal expert removes his blast suit. Seized items are removed from the house. Prisoners are questioned in Arabic before being searched, bound and blindfolded; they are then led away and placed in Land Rover. Merlin helicopter comes in to land; detention team leads suspects to the helicopter and all get on board; they are later disembarked at Basra Air Station and taken into custody.
