FORMAL SIGNING CEREMONY TO MARK THE HANDOVER OF BASRA PALACE TO IRAQI CONTROL, 5 SEPTEMBER 2007 [Allocated Title]
Two days after British troops made their final withdrawal from Basra Palace, documents are signed to complete the official handover to the Iraqi authorities.
Press conference at Basra Palace to mark the handover members of the press take their places before Doctor Mowaffak al-Rubaie, the National Security Advisor for Iraq, gives a statement in Arabic (translators are present). A representative from the Iraqi Prime Minister's office, Richard Jones (the British Consul General), General Mohan (Iraqi Army) and representatives from the United States Regional Embassy Office and the General Officer Commanding also make statements. Also present (but not speaking) is Lieutenant General Mohan al-Furayji, commander of the Basra Operational Command. Questions are taken from the press (including British journalists) and answered (in English and Arabic) by Doctor al-Rubaie. After the press conference, the official papers are signed by Richard Jones and the representative of the Iraqi government.
