Film on the history of the British Army from the 17th Century to the mid 1990s, with an introduction and conclusion from General Sir Charles Guthrie, then Chief of the General Staff. The film looks at the 17th Century origins of the Army, the English Civil War, War of the Spanish succession, Napoleonic Wars and 19th Century colonial conflicts before focusing on the 20th Century. Harry Williams, a Boer War veteran, is interviewed and film made during the Boer War shown. The First and Second World Wars are covered in some detail, including extensive use of contemporary film and interviews with veterans. Post-war conflicts, including Korea, Suez, Aden, Malaya, the Falklands and the First Gulf War are examined and the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege is also covered.
