Object description
Trials of Britain's first carrier-borne jet aircraft.
Full description
The film covers two series of trials, the first on 15 October, and the second on 28 October, 1947. In the first series three pilots are involved: Mr Lithgow, Lieutenant-Commander Brown, and Lieutenant Orr. In the second series, Lieutenant Orr is absent. Each landing is prefaced with full technical details, and is filmed first at normal speed by a HA camera shooting aft from the island, and secondly in slow motion from a camera located on an outrigger aft on the starboard side. Only one aircraft is used, the prototype TS 413. In a few cases the aircraft is also shown making a free take off. After Mr Lithgow's first landing, the aircraft is surrounded by a large crowd of spectators, and throughout the trials the carrier's island is packed with large numbers of onlookers.
