TRAINING OF GUARD AND TRACKER DOGS DURING THE MALAYAN EMERGENCY [Allocated Title]
A visit to the Guard Dog School, Ulu Pandan, Singapore, and to Wardieburn Camp, Kuala Lumpur, where tracker dogs are trained by men of the 1st Royal Hampshires.
CU of the dogs' food - haunches of meat in refrigerated lockers. Sequence showing a vet treating cuts in a Great Dane's left rear leg - antibiotic powder is blown into the injured parts. An Alsatian is groomed and has his ears checked for mites. On a playing field soldiers exercise their dogs, giving them a series of simple commands. A muzzled dog is released against a fleeing man and brings him down - the dog is called off, but when the man has recovered his feet and shows signs of further resistance it intervenes again. A Sergeant puts one of the dogs through its paces, leaping over hurdles and through hoops, crawling on its stomach and climbing over a scramble board. The Sergeant, still with his dog, talks with the School's CO, Colonel Ralston. CU as a patient Labrador is put into a helicopter winching harness, and the harness tested by lifting the dog. CU of a young Alsatian held in a wire cage - the dog is barking and snapping. CU of an Alsatian puppy with his handler, who tries to persuade the dog, without much success, to look into the camera. LA.CU of the notice at the entrance to the school - ARMY GUARD DOG UNIT R.A.V.C. Cut to Wardieburn Camp where a tracker dog leads its handler through tall grass - the dog casts about to pick up the scent. The handler transfers the pilot lead from collar to harness, and the dog sets off through the undergrowth followed by the handler and the rest of the patrol. CUs as a Labrador is fitted into a helicopter winch harness, and the rig tested by a quick manual lift. Whirlwind 'A' alights and men and dog emplane. The helicopter lifts off and moves away, to return trailing a deplaning rope. The soldiers throw out kit and climb down the rope as the dog watches from the open doorway of the aircraft. The dog proves to be a reluctant airborne trooper, hanging onto the doorway with its forepaws as it dangles from the winch, but it is nevertheless successfully lowered to the ground. On a second attempt, the dog tries to escape into the helicopter cabin as soon as the crewman attaches the winch line to its harness, but the evasion is unsuccessful and another undignified descent follows.
