SS company chief arrives in trench on daily visit of inspection and returns heils from men. Leningrad is visible on horizon and German front line passes through suburban tram terminus. Russian tanks which attempted to break Germans' iron ring around city lie destroyed in snow. Soldier fires 8cm mortar and 17cm K in Mörserlafette opens fire.

IX. Germans repel Russian attack on Toropetz Animated map of Moscow area. Bolshevik forces surrounded by Germans on Toropetz front are bombarded by 10.5cm le FH 18 and 15cm FH 18 artillery. Shells explode in the snow. Russian forces in distance are attacked by anti-tank and MG34 fire, leaving battlefield littered with wrecked tanks including US M3A3s and Russian T-34s. Frozen corpses protrude from the snow. Renewed enemy attack is warded off by mortar and artillery fire ordered by phone. night barrage continues till dawn, as shells explode in the snow. Some of the 4,200 Russian prisoners walk by; figure of 14,000 Russian dead suggests enemy's determination. X. Rescue of Atlantis crew and sinking of Norwegian tanker. Crew of auxiliary cruiser Atlantis are rescued from six dinghies and lifeboats after the sinking of their ship by a British cruiser (HMS Devonshire, 23/11/1941) in the South Atlantic. Small cutter with survivors comes alongside Type IXC U-boat, one of whose crew sports an ace of spades on his cap. U-boat then tows six small boats in line astern, while some Italian submarines which helped rescue arrive in St Nazaire (late December 1941) on board Calvi Class submarine, with German officers on conning tower with Italian commander. French advertisement for Byrrh visible on wall. German sailors say farewell to Italian comrades. Ashore at Kaiserhof Hotel in Berlin Grossadmiral Raeder greets Kapitän zur See Rogge of Atlantis who presents his crew. Close-up of Auxiliary Cruiser badge. Flashback to action by Atlantis shows lookout on crow's nest, sighting of "British" tanker, alarm signal, breaking German Naval ensign, radio operator listening to hear British SOS signal, loading and firing 5.9-inch gun and tanker exploding after direct hits and becoming pall of oily black smoke. Rogge in merchant marine uniform scans scene with binoculars.
