This fictionalised account begins by showing the ferry from Liverpool to Belfast, which sails at 11 o'clock every night. A man who is going to settle in Belfast tells his story. There are shots of: his boyhood in the Irish countryside; him being sent north to live with his uncle on his farm; his father taking him to a show at the Belfast Variety Palace; working for a degree at Belfast University in the autumn of 1939; him receiving news of the death of his father and learning that the country is at war; his friend's wedding; and working in the Belfast shipyards of Harland and Wolff. There is extensive footage of the yards. At the end of the film we see him going home to a new job.
